Apostille Requirements for a New York City Birth Certificate
New York City birth certificates may require several authentication steps before the New York Department of State can issue an apostille. We review your certificate before processing to confirm that the required elements are present.
Long-Form Certificate
The certificate must generally be the long-form version issued by New York City. Short-form certificates may not contain the information required for the complete authentication process.

Does my birth certificate need to be a long-form copy?
While many states can apostille either short-form or long-form birth certificates, a long-form certificate is generally recommended because it contains more complete information regarding the circumstances of birth, which may be required for certain international matters.
For New York City specifically, short-form birth certificates are not acceptable for apostille purposes. A new long-form certificate may be obtained in person at 125 Worth Street, New York, NY 10013, or online through VitalChek.
How long does the process take?
