Understanding Notarization

What Does a Notary Do?

A notary public performs authorized notarial acts involving signatures, acknowledgments, oaths, affirmations, and certain other document-related transactions.

The required notarial act depends on the document and the instructions of the person or organization receiving it. The signer must personally participate in the required act and satisfy applicable identification requirements.

When a signer cannot conveniently travel, a mobile notary may be able to meet the signer at an approved location such as a residence, hospital, office, or participating care facility.

A notary does not provide legal advice.

The notary cannot select a legal document, advise a signer about legal consequences, or determine which notarial act should be used when that decision requires legal advice.

Frequently Asked Questions

Notary FAQs

Common questions about notary and mobile notary services in New York.

Does the signer have to be present?

The signer must personally participate in the required notarial act. A notary cannot simply notarize a signature for an absent person because someone else brings in the document.

Do you provide witnesses for notarizations?

No. Global Apostille Group does not provide witnesses at this time. If your document requires one or more witnesses, you are responsible for arranging for the required witnesses to be present at the appointment. Witness requirements may vary depending on the document and its intended use.

What identification does the signer need?

Identification requirements depend on the notarial act and circumstances. We recommend confirming acceptable identification before the appointment, particularly for hospital or facility visits.

Can you travel to a hospital for a notarization?

Yes, mobile hospital appointments may be available when the facility permits access and the signer can personally complete the required notarial act. Advance coordination is recommended.

Do you visit nursing homes or assisted-living facilities?

Mobile service may be available at certain nursing homes, rehabilitation centers, assisted-living facilities, and other adult-care locations, subject to the facility's access and scheduling policies.

Can you notarize documents at a detention facility?

Service may be possible at certain detention or correctional facilities. Availability depends on the facility's visitor policies, notary procedures, scheduling requirements, and approval for outside service providers.

Can you notarize documents at a home or office?

Yes. Mobile appointments may be available at private residences, corporate offices, workplaces, hotels, meeting locations, and other mutually agreed locations within our service area.

Can you tell me which notarial act my document needs?

If the document or receiving organization provides instructions, we can perform the appropriate authorized notarial act. A notary cannot provide legal advice or select a legal act when doing so would require interpreting the document or advising the signer.

Can a notarized document later receive an apostille?

Many properly notarized New York documents can proceed through the appropriate county and state authentication process when required for international use. The exact steps depend on the document and destination country.
