New York City Requirements

Apostille Requirements for a New York City Marriage Certificate

New York City marriage records intended for use abroad generally require the appropriate certified record followed by County Clerk verification before state apostille processing.

For foreign use, an extended marriage certificate is generally the appropriate record because it includes the certification, original signature, and raised seal required for authentication.

City Clerk Certification

The marriage record must contain the required original signature and certification issued through the New York City Marriage Bureau.

The certified marriage record is submitted to the New York County Clerk for verification before proceeding to the New York Department of State for apostille.

Do I need a Letter of Exemplification? +
Current NYC marriage records issued through the City Clerk do not follow the same Letter of Exemplification requirement used for current NYC birth and death certificates. Historical marriage records held by the Municipal Archives may have different certification requirements.
