Frequently Asked Questions

NYC Historical Record FAQs

Common questions about historical records held by the New York City Municipal Archives.

What historical vital records does the Municipal Archives hold?

The Municipal Archives holds historical New York City birth, death, and marriage records from all five boroughs. The available years vary by borough, but historical holdings generally include births before 1910, deaths before 1951, and marriages before 1950.

Can you obtain a certified historical record for me?

Yes. We can assist with eligible certified-copy requests through the NYC Municipal Archives, subject to record availability and the information provided for the search.

Can historical records be used for dual citizenship?

Historical records are frequently requested for citizenship, genealogy, and other legal matters. The receiving authority determines the exact certification and authentication requirements, so those requirements should be confirmed before processing.

Can I request a Letter of Exemplification?

Yes. The Municipal Archives offers Letters of Exemplification for historical vital records being used for certain legal purposes. We can include that requirement when coordinating an eligible request.

What information helps locate a historical record?

Helpful information includes the person's full name, record type, approximate date, borough, and certificate number if known. Additional details may help when multiple possible records exist.

What if the record is too recent for the Municipal Archives?

More recent records are generally maintained by another NYC agency. Birth records from 1910 onward and death records from 1951 onward are handled through the NYC Department of Health, while marriage records from 1950 onward are handled through the NYC City Clerk.

Can you apostille a historical record after retrieving it?

Yes. When an eligible certified historical record is intended for use abroad, we can also coordinate the applicable authentication and New York apostille process as a separate service.
