Official NYC Marriage Records

Records Through the NYC City Clerk

The New York City Clerk maintains marriage records from 1950 to the present for marriages recorded within the five boroughs of New York City.

Depending on how the document will be used, the City Clerk can issue different versions of the marriage record. For international use, clients commonly require the extended certificate prepared for foreign use.

Global Apostille Group can assist with retrieving the appropriate marriage record and, when needed, coordinating the additional authentication steps required for use outside the United States.

Looking for an older NYC marriage record?

Marriage records from before 1950 are generally maintained by the New York City Municipal Archives rather than the City Clerk. We can also assist with eligible historical record requests.

Frequently Asked Questions

NYC Marriage Certificate FAQs

Common questions about obtaining New York City marriage records.

Can you obtain my NYC marriage certificate for me?

We can assist with eligible marriage certificate retrieval requests, subject to the City Clerk's access, identification, authorization, and record-release requirements.

What is an extended marriage certificate?

The NYC City Clerk issues an extended marriage record for foreign use. It includes the certification, hand signature, and raised seal needed for the document to proceed through the additional authentication steps typically required for international use.

Do I need an extended certificate for an apostille?

For an NYC marriage record being prepared for foreign use, the extended certificate is generally the appropriate City Clerk version for the New York authentication and apostille process. We recommend confirming the final document requirements with the receiving authority.

Does the marriage certificate automatically come with an apostille?

No. The marriage certificate and apostille are separate steps. A qualifying extended certificate must proceed through the applicable New York authentication process before the apostille is issued.

What if the marriage took place before 1950?

NYC marriage records from before 1950 are generally maintained by the New York City Municipal Archives rather than the City Clerk. Historical certified copies may also be available for legal or international use depending on the record.

Can you retrieve a marriage certificate if I live outside New York?

Yes. You do not necessarily need to live in New York for us to assist with an eligible retrieval request. Any required authorization, identification, or supporting documents will be reviewed before processing begins.

Can you also apostille the marriage certificate after retrieving it?

Yes. When the certificate is being used abroad, we can also coordinate the applicable county authentication and New York apostille process as a separate service.
