Apostille Requirements for a U.S. Passport Copy

A passport itself is not normally submitted to New York for apostille. Instead, an eligible notarized copy or accompanying affidavit is authenticated through the state process.

Clear Passport Copy

A clear and legible copy of the passport identification page should be prepared for the notarization and authentication process.

Notarized Certification

The passport holder may execute an affidavit or certification relating to the copy, which must be properly notarized by a commissioned New York notary public.

County Clerk Authentication

The notary’s signature is then certified by the appropriate County Clerk before the notarized document proceeds to the New York Department of State.

Important: The apostille authenticates the notarized certification or affidavit associated with the passport copy. It does not alter or authenticate the original passport itself.
