Apostille of a Singleness Certificate
A singleness certificate certifies that an individual is single, divorced, or widowed. Such a certificate, also referred to as a Single Status Affidavit, is commonly required for marriages that will be conducted abroad.
A singleness certificate is only legitimate if signed and notarized by a validly commissioned notary. Ensure that a notary complies with their state notarial requirements in order to be able to obtain their respective state apostille. Missing notary signatures or signatures that do not match the notary’s commission signature at the time they took their oath are the most common reasons why singleness certificates or notarized documents are rejected.
A singleness certificate is NOT the same as a Certificate of Non-Impediment or a Certificate of No-Marriage. These types of records are issued by city agencies. Some countries require a Certificate of Non-Impediment in lieu of a singleness certificate.

Apostille Requirements for a New York City Singleness Certificate
The singleness certificate must be signed by the intended party.
The singleness certificate must be certified by the county clerk’s office which commissioned the notary who signed your document.
A New York notary is certified to notarize documents all over New York. However, only one county clerk has their oath of office at the time they were commissioned.
Failure to comply with any of the above requirements will result in a rejected application from the New York Department of State.
